Help with Senior Care in the US

Nursing Homes or Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF)

Today there are over 16,000 nursing homes in the United States.  Nursing homes, or skilled nursing facilities (SNF) as they are otherwise known, are for seniors who do require constant medical or specific assistance with daily living.   Although modern medicine seems to be prolonging the average lifespan these days, it can often not offset the natural process of aging, and with this come varying degrees of incapacity.

A nursing home is generally a stand alone facility where specialist medical care is administered along with general custodial care.  Some nursing homes may be an annex of a hospital or an assisted living community.  A nursing home in the US has to have qualified licensed nurses on staff, in addition to care providers.  By federal law, a licensed nurse must be on duty 24 hours a day.

Different establishments can offer different regimes, accommodations, medical services and activities.  Therefore, it is very important to fully research any nursing home you are considering, and weigh up what specific services and enhancements it can offer to its residents.

The average cost for nursing home care ranges from around $4000 to $8000 per month.  As it can be a stressful time moving an elderly relative into a care facility, it is highly recommended that you consider what long-term care is required.  Too often family can opt for a less comprehensive care service facility, which cannot offer the full range of medical care, and then have to move their elderly relative yet again where their care needs change.

Due to the high costs for nursing home care, many Americans seek to use funding from Medicare or Medicaid to supplement their nursing care costs.
